In 2016 the four of us purchased a home together and we have been living together ever since. Our purpose in doing this was to give ourselves a cost effective, safe and supportive environment for our retirement years. We each have a 25% interest in the property which means that we have preserved some home equity for future needs or to leave to our individual heirs.
We renovated the property, attempting to anticipate how our physical needs may change over time. So, we have an elevator, wide doorways and hallways, accessible bathrooms. We have plans to add a ramp to make wheel chair access available when necessary.
We have also included a suite that will be suitable for a live-in caregiver should that ever become necessary.
We had four main objectives in designing this living environment:
Safety: We watch out for each other. We can alert family if we see changes in healt
Social: We have people to talk to and share dinner with. (Although we do each live our own lives fairly independently)
Financial:: Our monthly expenses are much lower than they were when each of us lived alone.
Control: We are in control of our lives. No one organizes our "activities" or decides when and what we will eat. We run our own home.
